How do I find out if I have been accepted as a Veteran?

If you meet the eligibility criteria this is an automatic process. You will receive a welcome letter and badge during your first few months of retirement.

Can I keep my colleague discount card in retirement?

Yes, if you have a minimum of 25 years continuous group service and you are retiring and leaving the Company.

If I am eligible for my colleague discount card will I receive a new card?

Yes, a new veterans discount card will automatically be sent to your home address . However, as a veteran the only additional signatory on your card is your spouse/civil partner, no other family member can use your card.

What if I have not completed 25 years continuous service?

Then you are not eligible to retain your card in retirement, the card should be handed in to your Personnel Manager/Line Manager. The card will automatically become invalid.

What happens if I am house bound through ill health and I am unable to get my own shopping and I have no spouse?

You can then apply via Veterans Support Office for a Blue house bound authorisation to shop card asking for permission for a relative or carer to shop on your behalf. Discount must only be claimed against your personal shopping.

If your card is not used in line with Company guidelines we reserve the right to invalidate your card.

What if there is no JS store within my area and I cannot use my colleague discount card?

Then you can surrender your card in exchange for gift vouchers, which will be issued at Christmas. You need to return your colleague discount card by the end of October to the Veterans Support Office, Holborn.

As a spouse of a colleague who died in service do I retain the colleague discount card?

Yes if the colleague had completed 25 years continuous group service at the time of their demise.

If I retire due to ‘ill health retirement’ do I become a Veteran and retain my colleague discount card?

Yes, if on retirement you have completed 25 years continuous group service.

If I leave due to ‘medical dismissal' do I become a Veteran and retain my colleague discount card?

Yes, if on retirement you have completed 25 years continuous group service.

If I leave under 'voluntary/compromised severance' do I become a Veteran and retain my colleague discount card?

Yes, if at the time you leave you have completed 25 years continuous group service.

As a veteran when I pass away will my spouse qualify for the veterans benefits?

Yes the surviving spouse/civil partner becomes the Veteran and retains the benefits.

Can I still pay Sainsbury's Social Association membership in retirement?

No all subscriptions cease on retirement.

Do I receive a Sainsbury's Social Association membership card?

No your veteran discount card or pension slip can be shown as identity when claiming discount.

Will I receive a copy of the Sainsbury's Social Association newsletter in retirement?

No, offers will be advertised within the Veterans News and a Sainsbury's Social Association contact number is included in your JSV Diary.

Will I still be classed as an SSA member at my work location?

This is not policy; it is entirely at the discretion of the local committee

Will I continue to receive an invitation to the 25 Club Dinner once I retire?

No, once retired, invitations to 25 Club cease. If you retire in the year you reach 25 years service then you attend that year's dinner only.

Can I still send my 25 Club gift in for repair?

No, once you retire you must arrange and pay for all repairs
